Join us on February 1st at 8pm EST for our Dark Moon Imbolc Zoom Ritual:
High Phoenix Nikki will lead this ritual and guide us through a meditation to meet the Goddess whom this sabbat honors, the Celtic Jack of Trades, Brigid! She is one of the more popular of the Celtic Pantheon and holds domain over fire, hearth and home, metal working, weaving, healing, divination, arts, and is a protector of women and children. Brigid has a very rich history from the ancient days to becoming the Catholic St. Brigid of Kildare, and many believe that this goddess is found in Voodoo traditions as Maman Brigitte.
Imbolc is a time for renewal, purification, and for some a time to plan and prepare for this year's garden, be it an actual garden or your inner garden--a time to prepare this years realistic and attainable goals. Some people may also begin their "spring cleaning" in February, too. In Roman Paganism, February is a month dedicated to death and purification, named for the God Februs. In the days of ancient Rome, it was a time to purify Rome and give offerings to the Chthonic Gods, those entities of the Underworlds. The Roman year ended on the last day of February, and a new year began on March 1st, a day sacred to the Roman Hearth Goddess, Vesta (another goddess whom shares many similarities with Brigid).
If you're wanting to engage in your own purification rituals, might I suggest the Cut and Clear Candle and Oil from Moonlight Potions & Charms? It is time to cut what is no longer needed or wanted, and clear the way for new beginnings and opportunities!
Or perhaps you're interested in enhancing your bond with Brigid herself? Check out the Brigid Oil, too.
For me, instead of Imbolc, I call this day Midwinter, as the First Day of Winter happened on the Solstice, it only makes sense to me for Feb 2 to be Midwinter. With temperatures in the single digits, it certainly doesn't feel like the beginnings of Spring to me, as it may for some in other parts of the world who observe Imbolc. Winter tends to be harsher in February in my neck of the woods, Midwinter is definitely more fitting on my path. Reindeer Mother is still carrying the sun higher and higher into the sky, as the days are getting longer and longer. But the warmer and warmer ain't here yet.
Since Brigid isn't a regular deity of mine, on Midwinter, I honor all of my Hearth, Home, and Fire Entities. Like the snakes of my area, I'm still brumating! To learn a bit about other Fire Goddesses, check out this article: Dandelion Lady: Imbolc Invocation to the Fire Goddesses.
An entity who's come forward to be invoked this Midwinter is the Greek God of the Forge--yet another entity who shares domain with Brigid (notice a theme among these fire entities?)--Hephaestus. A deity who's no stranger to work. According to John Beckett, "Imbolc tells us to get ready to go to work" (1). I wonder what Hephaestus' message will be for attendees? I guess you'll have to join us to find out.
This February 1st at 8pm EST, come to meet the Goddess Brigid with your guide, High Phoenix Nikki, and ask an Oracle of Hephaestus your burning questions of how you should proceed this year so you'll have something to harvest come fall!
