The Dark Moon of Lammas

The one thing I love about living in North Carolina is the changing of the seasons. When the end of summer approaches, the leaves on the trees start to change into beautiful multiple colors of red, yellow, orange, and golden brown as it prepares for the coming season of Autumn. It’s a beautiful example of the Wheel of the Year.

When the leaves begin to change, nature speaks letting us know that Lammas is upon us. Also known as Lughnasadh, Lammas is celebrated on August 1st or 2nd, depending upon one’s spiritual beliefs. It marks the first harvest of the year. This is the time of the year where we honor the sacrifices we have made, and those who are no longer with us have made. It’s a time to reflect on what has happened during the previous months, be grateful what we have, and get rid of what no longer serves us. When we reflect, we need to reflect on the entire process. Many people celebrate Lammas with bread. We need to reflect on the entire process starting from the reaping of the wheat, turning the wheat into grain and flour, mixing it with other ingredients to make dough, cooking it at the right temperature, and finally allowing the loaf to come out of the oven and onto the table. Each step deserves time to reflect on because if there is one step that is not done properly, the entire process could be in danger. There were sacrifices made at each step of the process to obtain the final product.

We have also entered the dark half of the year. The summer is winding down, and soon autumn will lead into the winter. Shadow work is good for anytime during the year, the dark half is perfect for inner contemplation. Many magickal people don’t like shadow work as it causes them to confront their fears and traumas. Shadow work helps magickal people in so many ways including being able to control their emotions, identifies triggers, emerge from their darkness, learn about themselves, and get rid of a lot of their emotional trauma. Shadow work also helps magickal people discover new talents and abilities.

The Dark Moon is a perfect time for Shadow Work as it is the time to banish what you no longer need and shine light on the unknown aspects of the mysteries. This year Lammas falls near the time of the Dark Moon.

Whenever you start your shadow work, you should have a Shadow Work Grimoire. The Shadow Work Grimoire contains details of what you did, identifies triggers, what you decide to do to overcome those triggers, and so much more. Creating a Shadow Work Grimoire helps you to uncover something that may not have made sense during your shadow work session. It can help you to reflect to determine if you have overcome that particular trauma or not. The way you know if you have overcome it is by looking at that trauma as if it is playing on television or a movie theater, and you have no emotion at all about the issue. You will never get over a trauma. People who say “to get over it,” never experienced that particular trauma; therefore, they never understand how or why that particular trauma continues to haunt another person. You can overcome or get through a trauma, and become a better person.

During the Lammas Dark Moon ritual, Evermoving We Rise will create a Shadow Work Grimoire. For this ritual, you will need a notebook, piece of paper, pencil, and protection or phoenix oil.

Evermoving We Rise’s Phoenix Oil is created with the blessing of the Phoenix, the Evermoving We Rise’s mystical creature. The Phoenix is a creature that rises from the ashes as a brand new phoenix, representing new beginnings. This creature is perfect to symbolize Shadow Work because one must burn away what no longer serves them to rise from the ashes as a better, more advance version of themselves. The Phoenix Oil is created with a blend of herbs and oils that is prayed with specific intention, and blessed by the Phoenix.

The notebook can be any notebook. A bullet journal is recommended as you can created drawings, charts, and be able to write in this journal. You never know what you will discover when you do your shadow work.
